The countdown has began for Christmas and this year’s Frosty Salmon Festival Ballina takes place from December 4th to 18th in the town. Incorporating the entire business community of Ballina and featuring a range of events and activities, Ballina Chamber, Jackie Clarke Collection, Mayo County Council, Kilmoremoy Ladies GAA club, Ballina Boy Scouts and Ballina Girl Guides and Mayo North Promotions office are excited to present this year’s programme of events.
Kicking off the Christmas period in Ballina will be Santa arrival party on Sunday December 4th in the Jackie Clarke Collection from 2pm-5pm.
Mrs Claus will be in attendance, reading Christmas stories and the Ev’ry Voice Choir will be singing some Christmas classics. The main man himself will arrive to meet the children and parade through Ballina to his Grotto in the Military Barracks where he will be taking up residence over the festive period in Ballina. There will be arts, crafts and festive games with Ballina Girl Guides and some tasty treats available too.
The Jackie Clarke Collection is also hosting a Christmas letter to Santa competition. The aim of this competition is to get young children to practice the sometimes forgotten tradition of handwriting their own Christmas letter to Santa. Entries should be dropped into the Jackie Clarke’s special post-box by Friday the 2nd of December at 4pm, and include the child’s name and a parent’s contact details. The three winners chosen will get an exclusive sleigh ride with Santa and a wonderful gift set from Toymaster.
A European-style Mistletoe Market will also take place in the Military Quarter, turning Ballina’s town centre into a festive fare of decorated stalls and lights, local traditional crafts and artisan foods. The markets will take place from the 10th to 11th of December and provide a feast for the senses as we countdown to the Christmas holidays, and is a fundraising event for the County Junior Champions, Kilmoremoy Ladies GAA club.
An instant sell-out every year, the hugely popular Polar Express Train is set to take off once again from Ballina Train Station on Saturday 10th and Saturday 17th December at 11:30am to depart for Manulla Junction. Enjoy festive thrills on the tracks with Santa and a host of other surprises on board this Irish Rail special service.
Pre-booked tickets for the Polar Express go on sale on Saturday, December 3rd at 12pm at Ballina train Station on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets €10 each. In order to ensure that as many children as possible are accommodated, the committee requests that each child be accompanied by a maximum of two adults.
Bring the little ones to visit Santa in his wonderfully decorated grotto in the Military Barracks. Hand him your letters and find out about Rudolph’s favourite treats! And there’s a small present for every child admitted.
The Grotto opens from 2-6pm each day, and a charge of €5 applies per child.
