Game Angling Paradise

Much of North Mayo is drained by the world famous River Moy and its tributaries which comprise Ireland's most prolific salmon angling waters. This magnificent river has produced a five year average catch of 9,105 for the year's 2006 - 2010, with over 12,000 salmon reported for the 2010 season. The Moy offers a variety of fishing including top class fly water, spinning and worming and fishing is available to suit all tastes and budgets.

The world-famous Moy Fishery at Ballina, which is managed by Inland Fisheries Ireland - Ballina, comprises some of the world's most sought-after salmon angling pools, including the Ridge Pool which has recorded up to 5,000 salmon to rod and line in a single season.

Lough Conn, one of the great western lakes, is part off the Moy system and is noted mainly for its wild brown trout fishing. It is during the Mayfly period that Lough Conn has earned its reputation as one of Ireland's top quality trout lakes but it can produce quality trout any time from the start of the season in mid February to the end of September.

It also produces salmon, mostly to trolling, throughout the season.

North West Mayo is also characterised by a range of excellent spate rivers such as the Owenmore, Owenduff and Glenamoy which provide good salmon and sea trout fishing amongst spectacular remote mountain scapes.Carrowmore Lake, near Bangor Erris also provides excellent salmon and sea trout fishing for the fly angler in tranquil unspoilt surroundings.

The numerous estuaries and inlets are a big attraction for the sea trout angler. The Moy estuary is a wonderful complex of islands and tidal channels which is probably the most productive sea trout fishery in the west, with estimated catches of up to 3,000 fish per season.

The bulk of the catch is taken on bait but an increasing number of anglers are enjoying great success with the fly. These waters are well serviced with boats and guides which are available locally.
