The Giro de Baile North Mayo Sportive takes place once again in 2017 on Sunday 6th August. The cycle departs at 8:30am from Main Street, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo.
Now in its fourth year, this epic sportive, which has fast become one of Ireland’s best-loved cycling events takes in a spectacular scenic course from Ballycastle Village right along the North Mayo Coast, into the very heart of Erris (officially the best place in Ireland to Go Wild!). It is modelled on the famous Ring of Kerry cycle, sanctioned by Cycling Ireland, and encompasses 146km of the most stunning Mayo North scenery, most of it along the Wild Atlantic Way.
The Giro de Baile is hosted by Baile an Chaisil Cycling Club, and is sponsored this year by Kelly Environmental and Ballycastle Bike Hire.
As always, the ride is not a race. Rather, it’s a chance to enjoy a challenge with like-minded people, while taking in the spectacular views along the route.
You can expect the following for your entry fee:
– A choice of three challenging routes – 146 km, 104km and 60 km
– Clearly marked routes with signage and marshals on the routes
– Route-cards and maps
– GPS routes

– Professional photography of the event
– Free food and drinks after your ride
– Free Car Parking
– Professional Bike Service
– Rider Public Liability Insurance
– Shower and changing facilities
– Free Camping
– Awesome views
– A whole lot of fun!
Finishers will receive a specially designed medal.
There will be three routes available to participants – for the more experienced, the 146km route follows a wonderfully scenic course from Ballycastle Village right along the North Mayo coast through Lacken, Killala, Crossmolina, cycling right into the heart of Erris through Bangor, Barnatra, Pullathomas,Cornboy and Belderrig before returning to Ballycastle.
This route along the sheer coast of the Atlantic is truly spectacular, passing scenic highlights like the famous Downpatrick Head, now a Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Point, Lacken Strand, Porturlin and the Stags of Broadhaven.
This year, by poprular demand, a new 104km route has been added.
For the intermediate or leisure cyclist, the 60km route takes in the parishes of Ballycastle, Lacken, Killala, Cooneal, Crossmolina, Moygownagh and Kilfian with many of the highlights above included on the route.
The Giro de Baile prides itself on being a community-run, non-competitive day out. Novice cyclists need not feel intimidated as the event is primarily a fun and relaxed day out on your bike with like-minded people. While the event will be timed, you are only riding against yourself, the clock and the course.
All information is available on the Giro de Baile website.
Early bird registration: €30 | Day registration €45 (Registration from 8:00am)
We would strongly recommend entering before the day (and availing of the early bird rate!)
