The Moy Valley region is all set for an action-packed Halloween weekend in Mayo North and surrounds,, with a whole host of events taking place. Whether it is chasing ghosts and goblins, creating spooktacular arts and crafts, or enjoying one of the many musical performances, we are sure you will find something suitable for all the family.
Children of all ages are well catered for over the course of the October Bank Holiday weekend with a whole host of spooktacular events taking place.
Firstly as part of Ballina’s Halloween Festival, Samhain Abhainn, there is the Fanta Scary Woods Walk from the 28th – 30th October. This year, the Scary Woods Walk is set to be scarier than ever as Ballina welcomes Huxley Horror to town! The Huxley Horror group has gained a stellar national reputation for torturously terrifying events and installations, featuring at events like Knockanstockan, Electric Picnic and Glastonbury. Their presence in the eerie surroundings of Belleek Woods is sure to raise a few hackles on the route – expect the unexpected!
A Kiddies Halloween Horrors Fancy Dress Disco hosted by Kilmoremoy Ladies GFC takes place on Wednesday 2nd October in the Ballina Stephenites clubhouse.

Spooky Scéals Storytelling takes place in the Jackie Clarke Museum on the 1st & 2nd November at 12:00 noon and 2pm each day. These events are free.
John Deasy from the Mount Falcon Hotel also hosts the Halloween Hoot Owl Display on 3rd November at 2pm, also in the Jackie Clarke Museum.
For those interested in arts and crafts there is a whole host of events taking place throughout the region.
The Killasser Community Centre (near Swinford) is hosting a weekend of spooktacular arts and crafts workshops with Christina & Catherine on the 29th & 30th October. Each workshop costs €12 per child and runs for four hours. More details are available on the Facebook link above.
Sunday 30th October sees master food Sculptor Saw Tun demonstrate, and share techniques in creating beautiful centrepieces in Straide Hall. As part of the Samhain Abhainn Festival Ballina, Ballina Arts Centre is hosting a Creepy Crafts Art Workshop for children on 29th October. Music fans in the area are in for a treat over this weekend as there are a number of events taking place that are sure to cater for all tastes.
Kicking off the weekend on October 28th in the Ballina Arts Centre are trad/folk musicians Dermot Byrne, Australian Steve Cooney, and Tyrone man Trevor Hutchinson. For more information you can contact the Ballina Arts Centre on 096 73508. Tickets: €16 / €14.
The amazing Whileaways & John Hoban play in the intimate setting of Foxford Woollen Mills on October 29th at 8pm. Tickets are €20 and are available from the Woollen Mills, Galway Roast Castlebar, & Ballina Tourist Office.
October 29th also sees a barn dance in aid of Vicky’s Treatment Fund taking place in the Foxford Leisure Centre with music by Francis & Eamon and Stuart Moyles and his country band.
With a theme of Matchmaking and wedding customs of old the Féile na Samhna festival takes place from 29th – 31st October in Swinford. There will be singing workshops for children and adults, very interesting talks with Joe McGowan and with Vince Hearns and a great night of singing on Saturday and the annual hooley on Sunday. The Killala Halloween Ball takes place on 30th October in the Killala Community Centre from 10:30pm. Prizes to be won for the best costumes. Admission for Adults is €8, while Students are €5 (With ID 18 – 21). Offer of Two entries for the price of one before 11pm. Plenty of other spooky surprises in store on the night.
All Giro de Baile Cycle volunteers are invited to a Fancy Dress special thank-you night on October 30th at 9:30pm in Katie Mac’s Ballycastle. The event is open to anyone who wants a good night out. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The October Bank Holiday Weekend sees two action packed events in the West Sligo area.
Firstly, there is the latest instalment of the Enniscrone Surf ‘N’ Turf Run on 29th October in Quigabar. This event is guaranteed to create plenty of laughs as competitors of all abilities run through a 5km obstacle course. Whether you fancy competing or just supporting along the route, Enniscrone will definitely provide entertainment for all the family. The run itself starts at 10am sharp at Quigabar (Enniscrone GAA Pitch) Entry for this event is €20 for adults with under 16s €10.
