Rosserk Abbey
Rosserk Abbey is situated on the west bank of the River Moy approximately 4 kilometres from Killala town. This is an Abbey of the third order of Franciscans. It was founded in 1400 by a Norman called Joyce.
It is the best preserved Franciscan Abbey in Ireland.
The finely carved west doorway leads to a single aisle church, with a graceful east window. There is another fine window on the south wall of the chapel. In the south east corner of the chancel is a double piscina, unique in that it has a round tower carved on one of the pillars.
Other carvings include two angels and the instruments of passion. The domestic buildings are well preserved, with three vaulted rooms on each side. The dormitory, refectory and kitchen were on the upper floor, where two fireplaces back to back may be seen. |
