A family restaurant since 1986, The Lantern Chinese Restaurant is famed for its signature dish, Chicken Dry Hot and Spicy. Customers from all corners of Connacht and even Ireland travel miles just to order the Lantern’s Chicken Dry Hot & Spicy which some have aptly dubbed “The Taste of Ballina”.
The Lantern was the first Chinese restaurant in Ballina, and gave the locals their first taste of Chinese cuisine. The Chicken Dry Hot & Spicy recipe was the creation of Sunny Ho and he has since passed it onto his son Jackie who has taken over the running of the restaurant and takeaway.
Sunny and his wife Loretta were the original proprietors and began trading by the River Moy out of where Murphy’s/Longnecks Nightclub now stands in 1986. The Lantern moved from Murphy’s to Bury Street in 1994 and traded from there for 22 years until operations were moved to Emmet Street (beside Moran’s Furniture) in July 2016.
In their new location, The Lantern boasts stunning views of the Moy and St Muredach’s Cathedral, complimented by the trendy and inviting decor in the restaurant with subtle hints of Asian & Chinese influence throughout.
The Lantern offers a two-course early bird value menu for €18 from Monday-Thursday from 5pm-8pm.
