National Heritage Week

National Heritage week is a country wide event that takes place over the week of 18th to 26th August with Free events for young and old.  National Heritage week is part of European Heritage days which takes place all over Europe and is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union, in which over forty countries participate.

During the last week of August each year many national and hundreds of local communities participate and organise events.  Many of the events are FREE and the programmes aim is to highlight the abundance of great work that is carried out in all the communities and organisations in Ireland to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural Heritage.


Saturday 18th August 2018

Outdoor Yoga and Heritage Session  at Enniscoe House

Time: 10am – 11.30am

Yoga sessions to enlighten and rejuvenate, experience an outdoor yoga session as part of National Heritage Week.  These yoga sessions are taking place in historic and scenic heritage locations in Mayo.  Refreshments will be served afterwards and the sessions will suit all levels.  If weather is inclement yoga will be held indoors. Weaving a Musical History – Foxford Woollen Mills

Time: 1pm – 3pm

The Foxford Woollen Mills and the Foxford Brass & Reed Band have woven a history together for 122 years. Enjoy a musical and historical event, highlighting the band’s originally arranged music.

The Foxford Brass and Reed Band was founded in 1896 by employees of the Foxford Woollen Mills. It soon became part of the fabric of the community, playing regularly at town and county events. Since its redevelopment in 2014, the Band has gone from strength to strength, increasing its membership from an initial 18 adults to an impressive 62 (36 adults and 26 youth). This Heritage Week event highlights the music arranged specifically for the band by various musicians over the years.

A Memory Pod has been created for people to record their own memories inspired by the collection. During National Heritage Week 2018 we are inviting all our local residents to come in record and share their own personal stories to help conserve our social history here in Ballina and the surrounding hinterlands.

Exhibition: Traveller Life in the 1950s – National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park

See a fully restored barrel-top wagon; a traditional tent; a flat cart; a working tinsmith; a storyteller; and of course, a campfire!    This event is in association with Travellers’ Journey – a new temporary exhibition at NMI – Country Life exploring Traveller life and traditions in the west of Ireland. No booking required. This is a free, drop-in activity.  This living history demonstration will be created by Meath Travellers Workshops Ltd. to celebrate Heritage Week at the museum.

Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Story – presented by The Jackie Clarke Collection and Ballina Library

This event will afford an introduction into the military archives for all those interested in Ireland’s War of Independence. The workshop delivered by Frank Fagan on behalf of the JCC’s Volunteer programme in partnership with the Ballina Public Library and the Mayo Volunteer Centre. Free Tour of Enniscoe House and Gardens

A rare opportunity to visit this beautiful Georgian residence near Crossmolina. The Enniscoe Estate has been in the family since the 1650’s and the house itself dates from the 1790’s. North Mayo West Sligo Heritage Group presents: A Sacred Island Before Christianity

Mr Alf Monaghan, Middle East expert, in his research traces from the Neolithic period the origin and spread of Pre- Christian Eastern religious beliefs to Ireland and their impact here.  Ireland a central and accessible Island along the Mediterranean to Scandinavian seagoing route has given us a shared maritime heritage, language and religious beliefs. From the Neolithic period the sea was a corridor for trade, communication, ideas and beliefs. The later influence of Egypt and North Africa on early Irish Christianity can be understood.

A Heritage Walk and a History Talk! – Moygownagh

Irish Whale and Dolphin Whale Watch at Downpatrick Head

Venue: Starting at Downpatrick Head car park

You are invited to the annual, free and guided land-based whale watch at a local headland, as part of All-Ireland Whale Watch day on Saturday 25th August 2018

Info to note: While there are no guarantees of sightings, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the marine species that can be viewed locally. You should dress appropriately for the weather and conditions on the day and leave your pets at home. There are no boats involved, as all watches are from land. A History of Fishing in Belderrig (Exhibition)

Outdoor Yoga and Heritage Session  at Lacken Strand, near Killala

Time: 10am – 11.30am

Yoga sessions to enlighten and rejuvenate, experience an outdoor yoga session as part of National Heritage Week.  These yoga sessions are taking place in historic and scenic heritage locations in Mayo.  Refreshments will be served afterwards and the sessions will suit all levels.  If weather is inclement yoga will be held indoors. Bring a mat!

Carlo Scarpa film at Céide Fields Interpretive Centre

This year, the Céide Fields received the International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens from the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche in Italy, who produced a film about Céide Fields for the occasion.

The Céide Fields were hugely honoured to receive the International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens which “is a campaign of studies and care for a site which is particularly rich in natural, historical and creative values.” They see Céide Fields as “one of the most evocative and historically significant sites in the whole of Ireland if not Europe.” See why in this film produced by award winning film maker Davide Gambino as part of a free Family Fun Day at Céide Fields.
