A gem of book featuring the trip along the North Mayo coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way has just been published.  “The Road to Downpatrick” takes the tourist on a journey from Ballina to Ballycastle, guiding them each step of the way and sharing nuggets of history, folklore and the all-important local knowledge that enriches the journey of the local and the visitor alike.

Author Donal McCormick, whose family owns the outer part of the now world-famous Downpatrick Head demonstrates the wealth of knowledge he has accumulated over eight decades, and delights in sharing it with the reader. This is more than just a travel guide. It is a journey through time and through a landscape over 6,000 years old, that has witnessed many historical events including the French Landing of 1798 and given rise to a wealth of legends and folklore that will capture the imagination of readers of all ages.

The book is crammed with beautiful imagery of the breathtakingly rugged landscape, the ancient monuments, the flora and fauna and the towns and villages that make up this as-yet under-travelled portion of the world’s longest driving route.

“The Road to Downpatrick” was launched in April 2016 at Lackan Enterprise Centre by world-renowned archaeologist, Professor Seamus Caulfield. Donal, speaking at the launch, encouraged local communities to continue to work together to enhance and develop this beautiful region.
