The fifth annual West-Awake Honey Show hosted by the Mayo Beekeepers Association will take place at the Community Centre in Dromore West, County Sligo, on Monday 23rd of October 2017. The highlight of the show will be an in-depth talk by world-renowned beekeeper, Mark L Winston, who will share insights from his seminal work, “Bee Time: Lessons from the Hive”.
Club Secretary, Jude Walsh, will discuss the issues facing local farmers due to the relative decline of beekeeping activity in this area over the past thirty years or so, its implication for farming and the progress that is now being made. Farmers will be asked to think about how they can support the bees in the area and even encouraged to take up beekeeping for themselves.
In addition, there will be participation from nearby National Schools: their best artwork & poetry on the theme of“Bees and Pollinators” will be on show with a series of prizes to be awarded during an interactive afternoon session led by Daithi Lavelle.
And, of course, this is a honey show! There will be an exhibition of locally-produced honey with a range of classes and prizes to be judged by prestigious experts such as Michael Badger (MBE) from the UK , with participation by beekeepers from across Mayo, Sligo and Donegal. Michael will be the Chief Honey judge and will give a presentation on heather honey.
There will be spot prizes for the audience provided by local sponsors and the opportunity to buy beekeeping equipment from Donegal Bees who will be in attendance all day.
At the end of the evening the group will gather at the Flying Horse in Dromore West for a social event.
The West-Awake Honey Show will be a wide-ranging event, drawing on all aspects of the Connacht beekeeping community. The event is sponsored by SSE Airtricity, the power behind the windmills on Slieve Gamph overlooking Dromore West.
