A Proper Pint: McDonnell's Bar and Belmullet Take Centre Stage in Arizona - Visit North Mayo

In the heart of the stunning Erris locality lies Belmullet, a picturesque town known for its captivating landscapes and warm community spirit. Recently, Belmullet stepped into the spotlight with the American premiere of Kevin Siegert’s documentary series, “A Proper Pint,” featuring the iconic McDonnell’s Bar.

On February 10, 2024, the American premiere of “McDonnell’s Bar and Undertakers,” was showcased at The Irish Cultural Centre and McClelland Library in Phoenix, Arizona. The event was a spectacular celebration of Belmullet’s cultural richness, shining a spotlight not only on the town but specifically on the renowned McDonnell’s Bar.

Mairéad Melody Carr, Manager of Mayo North Tourism, praised the documentary for capturing Belmullet’s essence, stating, “The documentary beautifully captures Belmullet’s essence, showcasing its vibrant culture and picturesque landscapes. This exposure is invaluable for attracting visitors and enhancing the tourism experience in North Mayo.”

Belmullet recently found itself in the limelight when Hollywood star Domnic Cooper took the stage at McDonnell’s Bar, singing karaoke while filming “Cry From the Sea” in Erris, with production taking place and filming at Ballyglass Lighthouse.

Adding to the excitement, Belmullet 200, a local organisation commemorating 200 years since Belmullet’s establishment as a planned town, announced that they intend on hosting an Irish premiere and Q&A for “A Proper Pint – McDonnell’s Pub & Undertakers” on Saturday, May 4th, to coincide with the annual Mayo Day festivities, which will take place in Belmullet this year.

Earlier in the week, Kevin Siegert, the filmmaker behind the documentary, took to social media to emphasise his excitement to unveil the beauty of Belmullet. He shared the trailer link and pledged the screening proceeds to support both the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix and Turas Siar on the Mullet Peninsula. Turas Siar, located in Erris on the Mullet Peninsula, provides a valuable local history service and education centred around the Irish language, further highlighting his commitment to local communities in supporting and preserving the cultural fabric of the region.
