It’s great to see Andy Irvine return to Ballina Arts Centre in another great folk music gig to complement the now-thriving folk scene along the North Mayo coast. This veteran musician, singer and songwriter has been hailed as “a tradition in himself” and has maintained both personal integrity and highly individual performing skills throughout his 40-year career. From Sweeney’s Men in the mid sixties to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s, to THE Irish super group, Patrick Street, in the 80s, Andy has been a world music pioneer and icon for traditional music and musicians.
It was recently announced that RTE Radio 1 is launching its inaugural Folk Music Awards, and Andy Irvine will be the first recipient of their Lifetime Achievement award. It is hard to argue that there is anyone more deserving of this award.
Tickets: €18 / €14. Early booking advised.
