The community of Ballina is being rallied to play its part in the global environmental initiative that is Earth Day as well as Ireland’s National Spring Clean event.
The local voluntary Ballina Community Clean Up group, in conjunction with Mayo Co Council, is coordinating a major clean up around the town to mark both events this Saturday morning, April 17th from 8am to 10am and expects to have in the region of 200 volunteers taking part.
Local businesses, clubs, organisations and individual residents are urged to come out and join the effort which will see groups of volunteers clean a selection of designated areas under the supervision of a team leader.
“It’s going to very much be a united town approach,” BCCU chairperson David O’Malley said.
The event will be fully compliant with Covid-19 public health guidelines and participants are asked to bring their own gloves, wear masks and adhere to social distancing at all times in order to keep themselves and each other safe.
Volunteers can select an area of the town where they can collect litter in their own pod or they can join volunteers at one of the following designated meeting points at 8am:
Glasgow Kennedy House, The Quay; Judges, Sligo Road; Kilmoremoy LGFA Pitch, Bunree; Town Centre; Killala Road (St Patrick’s Well); United Drug (Parkside); Station Road (Eir Building); Church Road (meet at Jack Charlton Mural on Ridgepool Road); Ballina Town FC, Belleek.
If you wish to clean an area outside of the above, please let the group know in advance by emailing [email protected] by 6pm on Friday April 16th, detailing your name and group details; whether you need bags and where you plan to leave your bags when finished so that they can be collected.
Those organising their own areas are asked to please ensure that all bags have been gathered by 10am and left in the specified area.
If you need to contact Ballina Community Cleanup on the day, you can call David on (086) 6836117.
He added: “We’re encouraging participants to send us or tag us in photographs of them in action which will illustrate the great community spirit at play and add to what should be a great buzz on the day.”
We are looking forward to participating.
