A Presidential Connection
Caffrey’s Gallery now stands on the former home of President Joe Biden’s great, great, great-grandfather Edward Blewitt, who lived in the house on Garden St in the 1820s. A brick maker and entrepreneur in Ballina, until like many other Irish at the time of the famine, he and his family emigrated to America. All that remains of the former home of Blewitt, is part of a stone wall and fire place which is located in the yard at the back of where the shop now stands. It is from the fireplace that Ernie took the brick and had it mounted, so he and Miriam could give a piece of President Biden’s ancestral home to back to him.
