Camping in Wild Nephin National Park: A True Escape into Nature

Camping in Wild Nephin is not your typical experience. The park’s designated camping zones allow you to immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Ireland’s largest national park. What to Expect When Camping in Wild Nephin National Park

Untamed Beauty: The park spans over 15,000 hectares of mountains, bogs, forests, and lakes. From the Nephin Beg mountain range to the serene shores of Lough Feeagh, every inch of this park is teeming with natural wonders. 

Stargazing Opportunities: As one of the few Gold Tier Dark Sky Parks in the world, Wild Nephin offers crystal-clear views of the night sky. Bring a telescope or simply lie back and marvel at the constellations, planets, and the occasional shooting star. 

Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for native species like red deer, otters, and even rare birds like the Golden Plover. Camping here allows you to experience Ireland’s biodiversity up close. 

Camping Locations

There are a 4 designated camping locations within Wild Nephin National Park, camping outside of these areas is not permitted. Anyone found to have pitched a tent outside of these areas will be asked by rangers to break camp immediately.

Please note anyone wishing to camp will need to register at www.campingwildnephin.com, this is to make the park aware of your presence and allow them to contact you in the event of an emergency.

Campsites

Shelters & Bothy’s

There are a number of shelters located within the parkand there is registration system for camping at them. This is not a booking facility and the shelters are on a first come first served basis. Therefore if planning to stay overnight at any of the shelters it is advisable to always bring a tent on the remote chance that the shelters are full.

Wild Camping Code

If you are planning to camp in Wild Nephin National Park, please remember to abide by the Wild Camping Code during your stay. This is for your safety, to preserve the landscape for the flora & fauna and to retain the parks unspoilt natural beauty.

1. Camping within the Wild Nephin National Park is only permitted through the online registration system: www.campingwildnephin.com.
2. Camping is strictly prohibited at Wild Nephin National Park during Condition Orange/Red Fire Risk Danger Notices.
3. Camping is permitted in designated campsites only.
4. Campsites must be left as found, or better. Dispose of waste properly. Please take all litter, yours and others.
5. Latrine Protocol**; catholes for disposal of human waste should be located at least 30m away from watercourses and 50m from walking routes.
6. Campfires (including disposable BBQs) are only permitted at fire pits in designated campsites. Use only sticks from the ground for fuel, do not cut growing vegetation.
7. Be sure to keep your campfire small and under control. Burn all wood and coals to ash.
8. Campfires should always be fully extinguished, including all glowing embers, on the decommissioning of the campsite.
9. Bring your own fire retardant, in the event of an emergency at your campfire.
10. Soap and toothpaste must be kept at least 30m away from watercourses.
11. Dish and utensil washing will be conducted at least 30m from water bodies. All wastewater should be strained and scattered.
12. Conduct yourself in a quiet manner, disturbing neither the local community, wildlife nor other visitors.
13. Campsites must be kept visually unobtrusive.
14. Bring your own first aid kit, in the event of an emergency.
15. Failure to comply with this code will result in withdrawal of permission to camp. In such cases National Park Staff will demand that you break camp.

Tips for Camping in Wild Nephin 

Pack for All Weather: Mayo’s weather can change quickly, so bring waterproof gear, warm layers, good hiking boots and a sturdy tent. 

Respect the Wilderness: Leave no trace—take all waste with you and avoid disturbing wildlife or plants. 

Be Self-Sufficient: There are no facilities like toilets or water taps in the remote camping areas, so come prepared. 

Light It Right: Use a red torch to preserve your night vision and enhance stargazing.
