CCÉ Admiral Brown, Foxford – Celebrating Tradition and Community

Nestled in the heart of Foxford, CCÉ Admiral Brown is one of Mayo’s most vibrant branches of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, keeping the flame of Irish traditional music, song and dance alive for new generations. Named after Foxford’s most famous son, Admiral William Brown – founder of the Argentine Navy – this branch has become a hub of creativity, culture, and community.

A Thriving Branch

With well over 170 members, CCÉ Admiral Brown has grown into one of the largest and most active branches in Mayo. A particular focus is placed on encouraging young people, and today many its members are children and teenagers discovering the joy of traditional music.

Weekly and monthly gatherings offer something for everyone, from lively junior and teenage sessions to senior sessions in Cruiser’s Bar, Foxford. Members also come together for céilís, rambling house nights, workshops, radio performances and community concerts, keeping Foxford filled with music all year round.

Festivals and Fleadhanna

The branch is well-known for organising and hosting major cultural events. Each October it runs the much-loved Foxford Traditional Weekend, attracting musicians and music-lovers from across Ireland and beyond.

Foxford was also proud host of the Mayo Fleadh Cheoil in both 2018 and 2019, and in 2021 the branch was chosen by TG4 and Comhaltas to represent Connacht for the televised Fleadhfest series, a showcase of music and culture broadcast nationwide.

Leadership and community spirit

CCÉ Admiral Brown thrives under the guidance of its dedicated committee, their work – alongside countless volunteers – ensures that traditional music continues to inspire young people while bringing the wider community together.

Membership is open and welcoming, with options available for individuals, families, and young musicians eager to join in.

Foxford is a town steeped in history, and CCÉ Admiral Brown is proud to carry forward its cultural legacy. Just as Admiral William Brown left his mark on the world, the branch is ensuring that Mayo’s traditions are celebrated both locally and internationally.
