Ballina is preparing to take centre stage on the European stage next week as it hosts one of the first events of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
On Monday, 6 July, Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary will host an informal meeting of EU Employment and Social Affairs Ministers in Ballina, marking a historic milestone for both Mayo and the West of Ireland. It is understood to be the first time that Ballina and Mayo have hosted an event of this scale as part of an Irish EU Presidency programme.
The gathering will welcome more than 200 delegates, alongside support teams, advisers and officials, including Ministers from across Europe, senior representatives of the European Commission, European social partners and civic society organisations, as well as invited guests from neighbouring non-EU countries.
For Mayo, the event represents more than an important political meeting. It is also a valuable opportunity to showcase the region’s hospitality, culture, heritage and natural beauty to influential visitors from across Europe.
Minister Calleary has described the occasion as “a great opportunity to show the best of what Ireland, and in particular the West, has to offer.”
In keeping with the Government’s commitment that the benefits of Ireland’s EU Presidency should be felt throughout the country, Ballina’s selection as a host location highlights the growing reputation of Mayo as a destination capable of welcoming high-profile international events.
Delegates attending the meeting are expected to experience the warmth of Mayo hospitality, with many visitors reportedly planning to extend their stay or return at a later date to enjoy the county’s landscapes, coastline and visitor experiences. For some guests arriving from warmer climates, the prospect of spending additional time in Mayo’s refreshing Atlantic environment is an added attraction.
The event is expected to provide a welcome boost for local businesses, accommodation providers, restaurants and tourism operators, while generating international visibility for Ballina and Mayo during Ireland’s six-month Presidency, which runs from July to December 2026.
The informal meeting will focus on key social issues affecting citizens across Europe, including tackling poverty and social exclusion, promoting greater inclusion in employment and addressing the disability employment gap.
