A Mirage in the West - Visit North Mayo

A Mirage in the West

A Mirage in the West, as part of the Mayo Day 2024 and Belmullet 200 festivites. Come along to Carter Square, Belmullet, for a spectacular procession starting at 9pm on Saturday 4th May.

On May Day 1824 William Henry Carter, absentee landlord, arrived with his entourage into the barony of Erris on the newly completed road from Castlebar, the first road ever built in to this vast wilderness region. He immediately set about building a market town for the district. Belmullet town rose swiftly, remarked by its planner Patrick Knight as, ‘raised up as if by magic, a town in the wilderness, an oasis in the desert’.

The renowned LUXE Landscape Theatre Company will artistically reinterpret this historic tale. With the community’s involvement a lantern procession will follow the route of that first carriage from land to sea.
