Join the community of Blacksod in North Mayo on June 6th to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This historic day marks the crucial role Blacksod and Maureen Sweeney played in the successful landing of Allied Forces on Normandy’s beaches. The day-long event will feature a dawn remembrance ceremony, engaging exhibits, guest speakers, musical entertainment, and a special aircraft flyover, all honouring the bravery and legacy of those who changed the course of history.
D-Day 80th Anniversary at Blacksod – June 6th Schedule of Events:
5am: Dawn Remembrance Ceremony at Blacksod Lighthouse
10am: Exhibits open (Met Éireann, An Post, Military Archives, Irish Lights, and Saving Private Ryan props)
11am: Guest Speaker Ron Howko (US Forces on D-Day)
12pm: Guest Speaker Donal Buckley (Irish Neutrality, Then and Now)
1pm-2pm: 1940s Music by Bridget McMahon
Afternoon: Aircraft Flyover (weather dependent)
5pm: Combined Talks at SOLAS Visitor Centre, Eachléim, chaired by Michael Kennedy
