16th – 22nd August 2021 in Crossmolina Civic and Cultural Centre
“In My Grandfathers Time” is a photographic exhibition, from the J.J Leonard Collection, a unique archive of images taken by Crossmolina native, Jack Leonard from early to the mid 20th century.
The exhibition, curated by Anthony Leonard, grandson of Jack Leonard, vividly presents the social, cultural and political history of Crossmolina and much of North Mayo of that time. It captures images of the ordinary to extraordinary events, fair days to sports days, religious processions to political marches, thatch cottages to Big Houses.
This collection remarkably captures the local events happening in the foothills of Mount Nephin and its surrounds, on Irelands journey to political Independence in the early decades. This collection offers viewers a chance to reflect on a period of our history, to identify the buildings now gone or partially still standing, to link the people of the past to the present, to connect to a community that once was, to now that is.
“In my Grandfathers Time” is a “Must See” exhibition, to appreciate the brilliance of just one man, Jack Leonard, who captured life as it was in the times of such historic happenings in our country.
