The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced a new nationwide initiative offering free admission to all visitors under the age of 18 at its heritage sites throughout the month of August 2025. The Céide Fields Visitor Centre in North Mayo, one of Ireland’s most remarkable archaeological landmarks, is proud to be part of this exciting initiative.
This pilot programme is designed to remove financial barriers for young people and give them a chance to connect with Ireland’s rich heritage during the summer holidays. It’s an ideal opportunity for families to enjoy meaningful and educational experiences together — at no cost.
In addition to this pilot, the OPW’s Free First Wednesday initiative continues to apply, meaning all visitors will enjoy free entry to Céide Fields on the first Wednesday of each month.
Commenting on the announcement, Minister of State for the OPW, Kevin “Boxer” Moran said:
“I am delighted to announce that all under 18s will have free entry to OPW heritage sites this August, as part of a new pilot scheme. We are fortunate to have such incredible castles, monuments and historic properties across the country that are invaluable educational resources. I encourage all our young people to get out and explore their local heritage this summer.”
Mairéad Melody Carr, Manager of Mayo North Tourism, welcomed the initiative, saying:
“The Céide Fields are a jewel in the crown of North Mayo. This initiative by the OPW makes it easier for families to explore this extraordinary site and inspire the next generation to connect with our local history and landscape. It’s a fantastic way to combine learning with fun — and to celebrate the natural and cultural heritage that surrounds us here on the Wild Atlantic Way.”
Visitors to Céide Fields can experience the story of Ireland’s earliest known farmers, explore the award-winning interpretive centre, walk the stunning cliff-top boardwalk, and take in panoramic views of the Atlantic coastline — all while stepping back more than 5,000 years in time.
