Official Opening of IQ Ballina Marks New Era for Innovation, Tourism, and Community in North Mayo
Today marked a milestone for Ballina as Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital Transformation, and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary TD, officially opened Innovation Quarter Ballina (IQ Ballina). This expansive base is located at the historic Military Barracks, a site steeped in rich history dating back to 1798. This €8 million transformation, funded through the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) and Mayo County Council, represents a collaborative vision realised by Mayo County Council and Moy Valley Resources IRD, which will co-manage the facility and support tenant growth.
A Destination Bridging Past and Future
Originally constructed in the late 18th century, Ballina’s Military Barracks has played an iconic role in Irish history, having served as the billet for British forces until August 1798. At this point it was temporarily taken over by General Humbert’s forces during the Irish Rebellion. The barracks was later re-garrisoned and continued as a military post for many years. Today, IQ Ballina not only preserves this historical significance but also breathes new life into the site as a centre for innovation, entrepreneurship, and public engagement. It invites visitors to experience both its heritage and its forward-looking vision.

With room for up to 200 jobs and capacity for public events, IQ Ballina will not only attract business but also drive foot traffic and interest, boosting local tourism.
As IQ Ballina opens its doors, it promises to be a beacon of progress rooted in history—a place where the past and the future meet, offering a unique experience for tourists, residents, and businesses alike.
