Irish Astronomy Week, running from 1st to 8th March, is a national celebration of astronomy, bringing people together to explore the wonders of the night sky through talks, stargazing events, and educational activities. It aims to promote interest in astronomy and raise awareness of Ireland’s unique dark sky heritage.
Events are taking place all across Ireland and Wild Nephin National Park, home to one of Ireland’s most spectacular night skies, plays host to a number of these. This stunning landscape is designated as a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park —the highest possible recognition for pristine, light pollution-free night skies. This makes it an exceptional location for stargazing and astrophotography.

Brian Wilson Astrophotography Night
Join renowned astrophotographer Brian Wilson for an evening dedicated to capturing the wonders of the night sky. Brian, a regular photographer of Mayo’s dark skies, has produced some truly iconic images both within and beyond Mayo Dark Sky Park. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from an expert about setting up your equipment and the techniques behind breathtaking night sky photography.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Niall Smith – “The Universe through the Quotes of Carl Sagan”
Carl Sagan, one of the greatest communicators of science and astronomy, left behind a legacy of thought-provoking quotes. From the Pale Blue Dot to spiritual reflections on the cosmos, his words remain as relevant today as ever. Dr. Niall Smith will revisit Sagan’s timeless insights, exploring how they continue to guide us in understanding our universe. This engaging talk was a highlight of the Mayo Dark Sky Festival 2024, and we are delighted to bring it to an even wider audience online.
- 7th March at 8 PM – Weekly Dark Sky Walk
The weekly Dark Sky Walk continues, this week starting from the Ballycroy Visitor Centre. Enjoy an evening stroll under the stars, with the possibility of some stargazing if conditions allow. The walk is on flat terrain and covers approximately 1.5km, so dress appropriately for the weather. Walks take place in most conditions except during weather warnings or heavy rainfall – please check the forecast before setting out.
