A Treasure Trove Along the River Moy

Nestled serenely along the banks of the River Moy in County Mayo lies the charming town of Ballina, home to one of Ireland’s most remarkable private collections – The Jackie Clarke Collection.

This awe inspiring collection stands as the most significant private compilation of Irish historical material in public possession, comprising over 100,000 artifacts spanning 400 years. Among its treasures are items linked to Theobald Wolfe Tone, letters penned by luminaries like Michael Collins, Douglas Hyde, Michael Davitt, and O’Donovan Rossa. Additionally, it boasts rare books, proclamations, posters, works by Sir John Lavery, personal effects from leaders of the 1916 Rising, and much more.

Hidden Histories Revealed

This is genuine hidden history, a wealth of primary sources, many presumed lost over time, now preserved thanks to Jackie Clarke, former owner of Clarke’s Salmon Smokery, just a stone’s throw from the museum. In 2005, his widow, Anne, generously bestowed the collection upon the people of Ballina.

In Episode 3 of Ireland’s Hidden Treasures, Anne Marie Forbes, acting manager of the Jackie Clarke Collection offers viewers a glimpse behind the curtain of the old bank building housing these treasures, unveiling rare gems such as the cockade from Wolfe Tone’s hat. In addition to this you will see an exceedingly rare Proclamation of the Irish Republic from 1917, stumbled upon by Jackie during a serendipitous encounter with old second hand books in Dublin.

More than just a documentary series, Ireland’s Hidden Treasures is a tribute to Ireland’s enduring legacy and those devoted to its preservation.
