Following last year’s hugely successful launch, The Sleepy Scholar and really great tours are delighted to announce the return of their acclaimed #TalesandTrails: Legends of Leigue Cemetery Tours this September.

Three Special Sunday Tours in Ballina

By popular request, a special series of three Sunday walking tours will take place in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina – one of the largest and most fascinating burial grounds in County Mayo – on Sunday 7th, 14th and 21st September.

Timed perfectly to suit St. Patrick’s Church mass-goers, and open to all, the tours will assemble at 11:30am for an unforgettable, interactive storytelling experience.

At just €15 per person (with under 12s going free), the Legends of Leigue tours offer a family-friendly, screen-free way to spend an hour outdoors while exploring the cemetery’s most intriguing secrets. Visitors will be immersed in tales that blend folklore, history and local legend – from curious characters and mysterious happenings to extraordinary traditions that have shaped Ballina’s past.

Meet the Storytellers

The tours will be led by Bill Duffy of really great tours alongside local folklorist and social media personality Debbie McCole, known as The Sleepy Scholar. Bill, a Ballina native with extensive experience in heritage tourism, has worked at iconic sites such as Blacksod Lighthouse and now runs really great tours, which focuses on history, folklore and ancient sites across North Mayo. Debbie has built a loyal following online for her engaging, witty storytelling and deep knowledge of Irish folklore. Together, they have hosted popular past events including a St. Patrick’s Day walking tour and a Bealtaine folklore walk, and this collaboration once again promises to bring history to life in a way that is as entertaining as it is insightful.
