The museum’s special exhibition, “Mayo GAA – The Road to Victory,” curated by Education Co-ordinator Mike Kelly and the team at the Clarke Museum of Irish History, celebrates the rich history and proud traditions of Mayo football. Whether you’re travelling to Croke Park, cheering from home or simply soaking up the excitement around the county, this exhibition is the perfect way to get into the championship spirit.
From the legends of yesterday to the players carrying Mayo’s hopes today, the exhibition honours every generation that has proudly worn the green and red.
Step back through Mayo’s football history
Step back in time as you explore original newspaper reports from Mayo’s historic All-Ireland victories in 1950 and 1951, alongside original official match programmes from both finals and a remarkable collection of rare photographs featuring Mayo teams and players from the 1930s and 1950s.
Visitors can also get up close to some of the most treasured pieces of Mayo GAA history, including:
- Fr. Peter Quinn’s match-worn jersey from the 1950 All-Ireland Final.
- The original match ball from Mayo’s famous 1951 All-Ireland victory.
- Fr. Peter Quinn’s rare Celtic Cross medals.
- A selection of medals from Fr. Peter Quinn’s remarkable footballing career.
The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience the stories, achievements and traditions that have inspired generations of Mayo footballers and supporters, while celebrating the rich sporting heritage that continues to unite the county today.
A must-visit exhibition in Ballina
Located in the heart of Ballina, The Clarke Museum of Irish History is one of North Mayo’s must-visit heritage attractions. This special exhibition gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience some of Mayo’s most treasured sporting artefacts while exploring one of Ireland’s finest historical collections.
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the Quinn family, who loaned Fr. Peter Quinn’s jersey and medals, and Pat Cunnane, Principal of Behy National School, who loaned the 1951 All-Ireland Final match ball. Their support has allowed these remarkable pieces of Mayo’s sporting heritage to be shared with the public.
The exhibition will run until at least the All-Ireland Final.

The Clarke Museum of Irish History is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm, and admission is free.
