National Heritage Week is a country wide event that takes place over the week of 17th to 25th August with free events for young and old.  National Heritage week is part of European Heritage days which takes place all over Europe and is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union, in which over forty countries participate.

During the last week of August each year many national and hundreds of local communities participate and organise events.  Many of the events are FREE and the programme’s aim is to highlight the abundance of great work that is carried out in all the communities and organisations in Ireland to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural heritage.


Event: Belderrig Before People

Date and Time: 21st August 2:30pm – 5:30pm

Venue:  Belderrig Research and Study Centre,  F26 KXV6

A short talk at the research center followed by a walk to the seashore to see rock formations & traces of ice age. Back at the center an excavation in sand to recover samples seen at the seashore.

This Event is designed for children The natural history of Belderrig dates back 650 million years. Traces of Ice Age from as recently as 15,000 years age can be seen at the seashore as well as ancient Geological formations

Event: Bronze Age Tour for Children in Belderrig

Date and Time: 20th August 2pm – 5pm

Venue: Belderrig Research and Study Centre,  F26 KXV6

Professor Séamas Caulfield will give a children’s tour of the Belderrig Bronze Age Prehistoric Farm and House; and the archaeology and science labs. Children will identify plants by their pollen using microscopes.

Event: History of Fishing in Belderrig

Exhibition of vintage & modern day fishing gear, communication technology, modern & historic navigation equipment, full set of marine charts for west of Ireland on display.

Event: The 7/8 Saints of Belderrig

Date and Time: 21st August 7:30pm – 9pm

Venue: Belderrig Research and Study Centre,  F26 KXV6

This year Belderrig celebrates 150 years since our church was built. There are seven or arguably eight saints whose names or history we can associate with Belderrig.

A talk at the research center on the 7/8 saints of Belderrig, followed by a visit to one of the locations associated  with the saints during the year of celebration.

Event: Weather Trends for the West of Ireland

Climatology recorder Padraig McAvock will give an interesting talk on the changing weather pattern in the west of Ireland over the past 40 years.

Event: Dark Skies

Did you know that County Mayo is the home of the first International Dark Sky Park?

On a clear, dark night, you can see over 4,500 twinkling stars and other planets in our solar system, even the Milky Way. At our Dark Skies events you can find out more on how you experience the wonder of the night sky in Belmullet.

Event: Digital Archive Website Launch

Date and Time: 18th August 3pm – 6pm

Venue: Turas Siar, Cartron, Clogher, Belmullet, F26 PY04

Hosted by Turas Siar Cultural Committee. This event will launch the new Turas Siar Digital Archive website which will include old recordings audio and visual, and old photographs/pictures including artefacts.

This is a unique project and the first such undertaking in the Barony of Erris. It will also contain a dictionary of the old native Irish language which has also never been undertaken prior to this. It will include the history of the old monastic settlements, old prayers, songs and books previously published. The funding is provided through Mayo County Council

Event: North Mayo Sculpture Trail Tour

Venue: Commencing from Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Ballina Road, Belmullet, F26 D8N7

Hosted by Neal Doherty (in conjunction with Belmullet Tidy Towns)

Tour of the North Mayo Sculpture Trail (1993) departing Broadhaven Bay Hotel and heading for Killala via Ballina. Some of the sculptures require walking to access so please wear comfortable footwear.

We will travel along the north coast of Mayo picking up other items of interest along the way.

Event: Scrimshaw: The Art of a Sailor

Event: Karen-Community Open Day / Launch of 2019 Green Flag

Venue: Karen-Community Garden Ballina

Karen-Community Garden is one of five community gardens in Ireland to be awarded a Green Flag by An Taisce. This event allows you to explore the garden and meet some of the volunteers.

The volunteers include people from Myanmar – 7 Karen families, Syria, Germany, China and India. We also have members of Western Care with their carers and Praxis. We grow a huge range of fruit , vegetables and flowers as well as keeping bees. Tuition is given throughout the year. The event celebrates our achievements during the year.

Event: Whale Watch Ireland 2019

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group invites you to their annual, free and guided land-based whale watch at a local headland, as part of All Ireland Whale Watch day.

While there are no guarantees of sightings, given reasonable weather you have a good chance of seeing some of the marine species that can be viewed locally. You should dress appropriately for the weather and conditions on the day and leave your pets at home. There are no boats involved, as all watches are from land.

Recommended you bring binoculars, your sense of humour and refreshments for this 3 hour field event.

Join Kevin Barton, to explore the Ice House hidden on the grounds of The National Museum of Ireland Country Life. Using the latest techniques, we will survey the extent of the buried structure and discover its hidden secrets.

Using the latest earth resistance and topographic techniques, we will survey the extent of the buried structure. With the aid of some participants the survey will hopefully reveal this monument’s hidden secrets in a presentation of the results in the afternoon.

Event: Cattle Raid of Mayo in Lahardaun

Date and Time: 17th August 10:30am – 1pm

Venue: Leonard’s Pub Lahardane, F26 CV60

Hosted by Táin Bó Fliodhaise Project Steering Committee. A short guided walk of the Lahardaun area taking in the landscape associated with the Táin Bó Fliodhaise Cattle Raid of Mayo followed by a talk describing aspects of this Celtic Mythological saga.

The group will meet at Leonard’s pub in Lahardaun and following the guided walk will return there for the talk. Suitable clothing and footwear recommended.
