North Mayo continues to lead the way in environmental excellence, with several much-loved local green spaces receiving renewed recognition in the 2025 Green Flag Awards. This year, Ireland saw a record-breaking 128 award-winning public green spaces, highlighting a growing national commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and high-quality green space management.
Once again, Mayo features strongly and North Mayo’s standout locations continue to shine.
Jackie Clarke Collection Earns Eighth Green Flag
In North Mayo, the Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina has added yet another milestone to its achievements, earning its ninth consecutive Green Flag Award. The award celebrates the exceptional quality of the Walled Heritage Garden, a peaceful oasis in the centre of Ballina and a beloved space for locals and visitors alike.
This continued success reflects the dedication of the Collection’s team and volunteers who ensure the garden is beautifully maintained and accessible to all throughout the year.
Green Heritage Site Accreditation for Key Mayo Locations
Three important Mayo sites, including two in North Mayo also received Green Heritage Site Accreditation in 2025. This distinction recognises places of significant historic and cultural value that also demonstrate excellence in green space management.
Accredited sites include:
- Jackie Clarke Collection Heritage Garden (Ballina)
- Turlough Park, home of the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life (30 mins from Ballina)
- Ballycroy Visitor Centre, Wild Nephin National Park
Wild Nephin National Park & Ballycroy Visitor Centre Recognised Again
The National Parks and Wildlife Service were honoured with a Green Flag for Wild Nephin National Park. The park is an 11,000-hectare expanse of Atlantic blanket bog and mountains on the northwest coast of Mayo. It’s Ballycroy Visitor Centre also earned a Pollinator Plan Award in 2025 (Country Park/Demesne category) celebrating its outstanding commitment to biodiversity, pollinator-friendly practices and sustainable land care. This strengthens Mayo’s position as a leader in conservation and ecological stewardship.
Community Award: Ballina Karen Community Garden
North Mayo’s community spirit shone brightly again this year, with the Ballina Karen Community Garden receiving a 2025 Green Flag Community Award.
This accolade celebrates community-led green spaces that bring people together, encourage biodiversity, and inspire pride in local environments. The garden continues to be an example of inclusive, hands-on environmental action in the heart of Ballina.
