The most welcoming town in Ireland will once again play host to hundreds of runners as the River Moy Half Marathon returns to Ballina on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
Organisers say this year’s event is generating huge interest locally, across the island of Ireland and overseas, continuing its reputation as one of the standout sporting occasions in the region. Having attracted participants and spectators for more than a decade, the 2026 edition promises to be bigger and better than ever.
The scenic route will take runners along the banks of the River Moy, part of the iconic Wild Atlantic Way, and through the stunning Belleek Woods. The race will start and finish at Heffernan Park, home of Ballina Rugby Club, where a vibrant festival atmosphere will welcome participants and supporters alike.
Ballina RFC Club President Daragh Quinn, Club Chairman Alan Rowe and incoming President Richard West were joined by members of the organising committee and community representatives at the recent launch of the event. Also in attendance were Chamber of Commerce Chairwoman Mary Moyles and former Ballina and Connacht player Harry West.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Quinn said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be promoting and driving the River Moy Half Marathon alongside the organising committee. We believe Ballina is the most welcoming town in Ireland and everyone who comes and runs along the Moy backs that up. Over the years the event has always been promoted as a sport-tourism event which involved many aspects of our great community, as locals and visitors took part and that’s why we’re so excited about it. People come from all across Ireland and as far afield as Italy, Belgium, France, Britain and the United States to run here and they come back year after year because they enjoy it so much. We live in a great town where everyone is made welcome and that’s what makes the River Moy Half Marathon so special.”
Welcoming the continued growth of the event, Mairéad Melody Carr, Manager of Mayo North Tourism, added: “Events like the River Moy Half Marathon are hugely important for Ballina and the wider North Mayo region. They showcase not only our stunning natural landscapes but also the warmth, community spirit and sense of welcome that define this place. While I was sorry to miss the official launch, Mayo North Tourism is proud to support and promote events like this that bring visitors to the area and create such a positive buzz throughout the town.”
The event will conclude at the Ballina RFC grounds, where the club’s new facilities will be available for participants, ensuring a memorable finish-line experience.
