The Ronan Clarke 10K Run/5K Walk – in Memory of Killala native Ronan Clarke
The 5k/10k run was established in 2015 as a fundraiser for both Mayo Roscommon Hospice and the Killala GAA Benevolent Fund in memory of local teacher Ronan Clarke. In 2013 Ronan was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, and he passed away a year later on May 29 2014, at the age of 41. The father-of-three had been known nationally for his role as co-presenter with Mairead McGuinness MEP of RTÉ’s Ear to the Ground, but had returned to his native Killala to pursue a career in teaching before being diagnosed with cancer.
Preparations for the Ronan Clarke Run and Walk 2018
The recent official launch in Killala Community Centre of this year’s Run provided the perfect opportunity to start some training in advance of the dual course event when 30 attendees did their first practice walk along the Monasteries of the Moy Greenway. At the launch, Dara Calleary TD, recalled his time shared with Ronan Clarke in St. Muredach’s College, and reminded the gathered crowd of the dedicated sportsman, hard-working student and genuine friend that Ronan had been. He also reminded everyone present that Ronan would want young and old taking part in the Run to first and foremost have fun and enjoy their participation in the event.
Those interested in taking part are invited to join the Get Killala Walking group on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7.30pm at Killala Community Centre where guides will be on hand to give training tips.
Registration will take place from 10.30 am on the morning of the race the 29th of July at Killala Community Centre.
Following the run/walk, a delicious range of homemade treats and refreshments will be available courtesy of the Killala community.
