Frightening the living daylights out of everyone who visits Ballina, Samhain Abhainn Halloween Festival 2014 will take place from October 25th –Nov 1st.
The seven-day Frightfest of the West offers an action packed programme for people of all ages, and includes the town’s first Murder Mystery Tour and Zombie 5k. The renowned Scary Woods Walk returns to the terrifying setting of Belleek, while a ghost story trail, and trick or treat treasure hunt will also feature in the chillingly spectacular line up.
The festival attracts young and old alike during the Halloween break and is a truly unique experience in Ballina, building on the success of previous years to make an action-packed, frighteningly ghoulish fun and scary week. The aim of the festival will be to provide something for everyone to enjoy this Halloween, whether you are looking for a creepy murder mystery trail, a big night out on the town in your finest costume, a fright fest at the movies or a scary walk for the kids to relish, Ballina is the place to be.
The unique Irish historical context of Halloween will also be a big feature of the festival. First celebrated as a pagan festival back in 100AD, the Celts marked the season of Halloween or ‘Samhain’, an old Irish word meaning the ‘end of summer’. Fast-forward 2000 years and Ballina is building on Irish history in celebrating Samhain Abhainn – a summer’s end festival on the banks of the River Moy. This Halloween the town will be transformed into a land of magic, mystery and myth, waiting for you, your family and friends to come and enjoy. In a celebration of all things spooky and scary, and heavily influenced by Irish traditions and customs, Samhain Abhainn looks set to be bigger and better this year and add to its reputation as the West of Irelands premier family festival.
