‘Take Me Home Colleen’ returns to Ballina Arts Centre on Monday, July 8

Following the story of Sean Og Gaughan and Colleen Boyle from Killala during the Great Famine

Take me Home Colleen was written by local musician and songwriter Brendan Farrell. Following the story of Sean Óg Gaughan and Colleen Boyle , from Killala in County Mayo, this presentation recounts the realities that faced the people of North Mayo, from 1844 to 1850. The show premiered in Ballina Arts Centre on 9th February and following a run in Scranton, Pennsylvania will return to Ballina Arts Centre as part of the Ballina Street Festival 2019 on Monday, July 8.

Audiences will be treated to an audio-visual experience, featuring film, photography and folk music which tell the tale of the hardships experienced during the Great Famine.  The show features 12 original contemporary ballads, composed by Brendan himself.  Brendan, will play the part of Sean Óg and he will be joined on stage by Edana Barrett from Attymass, who will make her stage debut playing the role of Colleen. Edana will sing, narrate and play violin as well as playing the role of Colleen.

There is a strong reference throughout the show to our Mayo links with Pennsylvania, and also the Orphan Girls of Mayo that ended up travelling to Australia. the key message emanating from the performance is hope, amidst the hopelessness that saw hundreds and thousands of Irish people die of starvation during this dark period in our history.
