The residents of one of Mayo and Ireland’s most breath-taking areas have issued a unique challenge to those interested in fitness and fun with a bit of beer thrown in.
Lacken Humbert Development Association present The Lacken Beer Barrel Run. Team up to haul a full seventy-two pint beer barrel across a gruelling 8.5km cross-country and beach route in Kilcummin, North Mayo.
The event is the brainchild of the Lacken Community Enterprise Group .The winners will enjoy the contents of their barrel, along with receiving the John Loughney Memorial Cup, and will qualify for entry into the UK Championships.
Kilcummin is best known as the scene of the famous landing in 1798 of the French General Humbert as well as its vast golden strand, rolling sand dunes and lush green fields, located on the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way in Co. Mayo.
This fundraising event – the first of its kind in Ireland supported by Marc Reilly partner of J. Streicher, and will raise funds in aid of Samaritans Ireland who provide confidential and non-judgemental emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including feelings that could lead to suicide. It operates a 24-hour helpline (free-call 116 123) as well as a service by telephone, email, letter and face-to-face in most of their branches.
Already, practice runs have revealed great ingenuity, but while the route does not have hundreds of obstacles, it will provide a tough and physical but fun-filled challenge that is sure to bring a lot of craic! On the day, race adjudicators will inspect your carrying device to make sure you haven’t broken any of the course rules! The challenge will be tempered somewhat by the beauty of the views along the coastline, some of the most spectacular and undiscovered in Ireland and Europe.

The rules are simple!
Teams of a maximum of eight must somehow carry the barrel – weighing something like three sacks of spuds, around the Lacken coastline in the shortest possible time. It is up to the competitors how they carry their barrel. Only stipulations are that the carrying device must not have wheels, and your barrel must be secured to it.
The entry fee per team is €100 per team of eight, and post-race refreshments will be provided. Competitors can also enjoy live music, a post-race after-party in nearby Bessie’s Bar on Kilcummin Pier.
