This year marks a decade of capturing the breathtaking beauty of North Mayo and West Sligo through the lens, and we couldn’t be more excited! To celebrate, we invited photographers from all around to share their unique perspectives on the magic of this stunning region. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce some of the incredible entries we’ve received and highlight the winning image chosen at random.
Congratulations to Padraig Mac Canna, whose stunning photograph of the Uaigh na gCat Bronze Age Wedge Tomb in Belderrig was selected as our winning entry! This captivating image beautifully captures the ancient mystique and timeless beauty of one of North Mayo’s most significant archaeological sites. Padraig’s photo takes us on a journey back in time, allowing us to feel the history and wonder of this remarkable place.
Uaigh na gCat means ‘grave of the cats’ and is a Bronze Age wedge tomb dating back 3,500 years. This tomb is located up a short incline in the village of Belderrig. If you are in the area and would like to visit, here are the directions on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/uQURFysDvx9efLDA9. The land can be quite wet so wear appropriate shoe wear.
We have been overwhelmed by the talent and creativity showcased in all of the entries. From sweeping landscapes of the rugged coastline to intimate snapshots of local life and culture, each photo tells a unique story of North Mayo and West Sligo. It’s clear that these regions are a treasure trove of inspiration for photographers of all skill levels.
