Tonn Nua Surf School is based out of Glosh beach, a breathtakingly stunning beach on the Mullet Peninsula, Co. Mayo, Ireland. The first and only dedicated surf school in Erris, you’ll struggle to find a more impressive place to learn how to surf than in the best place to go wild, as voted by the Irish Times newspaper.
Tonn Nua was started in 2019 by Declan O Connor, who has a passion not only for surfing, but for the Irish language as well. Meaning New Wave in English, Tonn Nua is based in a Gaeltacht area and as the staff speak fluent Irish, you might even get to master a few local words. Every age, level and group size are catered for, whether surfing for the first time, looking to improve your skills or just have fun, they have what it takes.
The ‘People and Places of North Mayo’ took a spin up to visit Declan at his surf school on Glosh beach. His passion for surfing and the Irish language is clear from the way he talks about both. The desire to share these skills, with locals and tourists alike, make Tonn Nua a must visit if you’re in the area.
Lessons and Surf Camp
Group lessons are run daily, Monday to Sunday and don’t require any prior surfing experience. The lessons are great for people who want to experience the wild Atlantic surf in a safe and enjoyable setting. For ages 6 and up, lessons are completely beginner friendly and all equipment is provided.
During the months of July and August, the Laoch na dTonnta (meaning Hero of the Waves) surf camps are running. The 5-day camps run from Monday to Friday and combine surf lessons with water safety and some beach games. Surf Rentals
Tonn Nua Surf School can provide everything you need to enjoy the waves at Glosh beach. With wetsuits and surfboards to suit all sizes and shapes, you can rent either or both for 2 hours.
