Mayo North has already hosted the Mayo Mud Run and Mayo Stages Rally in recent months, and now as the sun begins to shine, the region is preparing for a top class, highly entertaining sporting programme for the summer months. Featuring the An Post Ras and the Republic of Ireland Strongman event, the calendar is set to cause a stir with a variety of sporting events represented.
The region has a great reputation for sport, with a range of local clubs and sports represented, the Ballina Parkrun continuing to go from strength to strength and an impressive calendar in store for visitors to the area. Certainly, there is much to look forward to, so keep an eye on this site for updates and get out and support both your local and international athletes, all set to compete ferociously to the beautiful Mayo North backdrop in the next couple of months.
1. An Rás to pass through Ballina in unique spectacle.
Number one is the latest edition to the Mayo North sporting calendar and promises much excitement as the unique spectacle of the Rás is set to pass through the town in a critical stage on the race on Thursday the 21st of May. This is a huge announcement for the area as the status of the bicycle race is well renowned at international level and extra excitement will be generated by the presence of the local rider Paddy Clarke who is part of the FitScience team.
There will also be exhibitions and activities in the Market Square Ballina in the lead up to the event and mini fringe events organised around the massive spectacle. Something to look forward to certainly, as the tourist season begins in full flow.
2.River Moy Half Marathon

3. Giro De Baile an Chaisil.
Calling all cyclists, dust down the bikes as the Giro de Baile an Chaisil takes place Sun, August the 2nd at 10:00am from Main Street Ballycastle Co Mayo
Hosted by Baile and Chaisil Cycling Club the Giro follows a wonderfully scenic course from Ballycastle Village right along the North Mayo Coast (see page photo) cycling right into the heart of Erris. Glancing around you will see the rugged coastline of North Mayo with Céide and the Staggs of Broadhaven in the distance.
The ride is not a race, it’s a chance to enjoy a challenge with like minded people with spectacular views throughout.

4. Ballina Quay Regatta Fest
The Ballina Quay Regatta Fest will take place in the Quay from the 12th to the 14th of June and will be a celebration of all things water related featuring boat races, swimming races, air shows, curragh racing and live music and entertainment. Featuring a full line-up of water sports, the revival of the regatta will be a magnificent spectacle for the town of Ballina and an event certainly not to be missed.
5. Republic of Ireland Strongest man event.
Taking place in the Market Sq Ballina on May 3rd, this competition is sure to cause a stir. Building on the success of last year, the event is national this time round and will feature some fantastic competitors in an array events including the following:
1. Farmers Walk (Grip) Distance x2 .
2. Monster Tyre Reps x1.
3. Car Deadlift Hold(Straps) x2 ,Time.
4. Bavarian Dead-lift Maximum x1.
5. Daddy Dumbell Reps,70kg x1, 90secs .
6. Stone Of Strength Reps ,160kg, 4ftx2, 90sec.
Republic Of Ireland’s Strongest Man 2015 for the converted King Fionn Trophy is coming to Ballina, and you won’t want to miss it. The top 16 Republic Of Ireland’s strongest men will be in attendance for this final and there will be a mini festival taking place around the Market Sq to mark the fantastic occasion.
