North Mayo is seeing growing numbers of European visitors (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland) as well as UK and North American visitors. And one of the things we have in common with our visitors is that we all love an authentic traditional Irish music session! We’re blessed here with a wealth of musical talent, and lots of trad sessions for locals and visitors alike to enjoy and here are some details of trad sessions in Ballina and North Mayo towns nearby.

The jewel in the crown of Ballina sessions has to be the lively Saturday night session in Rouse’s on Pearse St. Kicking off at 9.30pm in this beautiful old bar, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a locally brewed craft beer from Reel Deel Breweries! In summer, there’s an extra session on Thursdays at the same time.

Keane’s Pub, overlooking the beautiful Ballina Quay also hold a folk and trad session every second Wednesday night with all welcome to join in.

This year, all-singing, all-dancing Atlantic Rhythm Productions of TV3’s Ireland’s Got Talent fame will debut their very own show ‘Tradbeats’ in Ballina Arts Centre on July 18th and August 8th.

The Killala Bay Folk Club meets on the first Friday of every month in The Far Side at Lynn’s, often featuring special guests and this night is growing and growing in popularity and reputation.

Stephen Doherty and friends play in Cruiser’s every Friday from 10pm, and Le Chéile play there on Sundays from 9.30pm. Foxford has a proud tradition of Irish music and the Admiral Brown CCE is instrumental (no pun intended) in ensuring that this tradition is passed on to younger generations.

Our gateway town, Swinford also has a very proud musical heritage and session takes place every Thursday night, alternating weekly between venues. Swinford is not short on beautiful authentic Irish bars and we can guarantee you a wonderful evening and warm welcome in this charming town. The Gateway Hotel, Swinford is also hosting a Summer Sunday Night session each week at 8pm in their Flying Doc bar, featuring three of Mayo’s finest musicians.
Gort na mBó CCE (also known as the Bofield Céili Band) holds the weekly ‘Seisiún’ in the Father Peyton Centre, Attymass every Thursday evening during summer, starting on 19th July from 9pm. This is a fantastic evening of entertainment, with refreshments served, including the famous Father Peyton Centre scones!
Gort na mBó also play a monthly session on the last Saturday of every month in Bonniconlon, alternating between Judge’s and Gallagher’s pubs.
