A Boundary Map for the Community
We’re thrilled to share a valuable resource that brings clarity to the geographic makeup of North Mayo and West Sligo. Dr. Liam Alex Heffron, at the University of Galway, has meticulously crafted a modern map of the parishes in the region, complete with townland details.

Why it is important? The existing parish maps at Mayo Library, National Library and further afield, while informative, are based on old civil (Protestant) parishes and were never updated with changed Catholic parish boundaries in the nineteenth century — leading to serious inaccuracies in the case of North Mayo. Dr. Heffron’s work rectifies this gap, providing local communities with an accurate representation of their parishes for the first time, based on his interviews with community groups, GAA clubs and church authorities.
