Mayo North Tourism has welcomed the installation of two new eco toilets at the car park at Downpatrick Head, providing a welcome addition to the visitor facilities at one of North Mayo’s most iconic and popular attractions.
The new facilities, delivered by Mayo County Council, are an important investment at a destination that attracts visitors throughout the year to experience its dramatic Atlantic coastline, spectacular cliffs and the iconic Dún Briste sea stack.
Downpatrick Head is one of the great natural landmarks of North Mayo and a flagship destination on the Wild Atlantic Way. For many visitors, it is a first introduction to the extraordinary landscapes of North Mayo and forms an important part of the wider visitor journey along the Céide Coast.
Its appeal goes far beyond the views. The area is rich in geological, natural and cultural heritage, with its connection to St Patrick, unique coastal landscape and proximity to the internationally significant Céide Fields all adding to the experience.
The scale of visitation underlines just how important the site has become. Downpatrick Head has previously recorded visitor numbers of more than 300,000 in a year, placing it firmly among Mayo’s major visitor attractions.
With significant numbers of people visiting the site, appropriate facilities are essential — not only to enhance the visitor experience, but to support the sustainable management of the destination and the communities and businesses that benefit from tourism in the wider area.

Investment in practical visitor infrastructure such as this helps us to welcome people to our region while also respecting and protecting the landscapes and places that make North Mayo so special.”
Good visitor infrastructure is an important part of building a sustainable destination. By providing appropriate facilities at key attractions, North Mayo can continue to welcome visitors while encouraging them to explore more of the region — from the Céide Coast and Ballycastle to the many outdoor, cultural and community experiences across Wild Mayo.
